Facebook mobile ad revenue doubles in fourth quarter

(Blank Headline Received)

SAN FRANCISCO - Facebook Inc doubled its mobile advertising revenue in the fourth quarter, a sign that the No.1 social network is seeing early success in expanding onto handheld devices as more of its users migrate to smartphones and tablets.
Investors want to see evidence that CEO Mark Zuckerberg's 8-year-old company is delivering on promises to develop a full-fledged mobile advertising business, a challenge facing many of today's technology leaders including Google Inc .
But the growth trailed some of Wall Street's most aggressive estimates. Shares of Facebook were down roughly 3 percent at $30.21 in after-hours trading on Wednesday, regaining ground after falling more than 8 percent immediately after the numbers were released.
Mobile revenue estimates among some analysts and investors were unreasonably high, said Sterne, Agee & Leach analyst Arvind Bhatia.
"As a result the stock was set up for disappointment," he said. Overall, he said, Facebook's results were encouraging.

Women seek their place in sun at World Cup AFP

The women's World Cup opens in Mumbai on Thursday with the cricketers hoping to put aside memories of an unsettling build-up and gain recognition in a country where the men's game reigns supreme.
Barely a week before the start, the International Cricket Council was forced to revise the schedule because of security concerns surrounding Pakistan's participation in Mumbai where the entire tournament was to be played.
All group B matches, featuring Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, were shunted to the cricketing backwaters of Cuttack following threats from the right-wing nationalist Shiv Sena party to disrupt matches in Mumbai.
Pakistan will remain in Cuttack if they qualify for the second round, but will still have to travel to Mumbai if they make the final at the Braboure stadium on February 17.
Indian captain Mithali Raj said she was disappointed that the Pakistani team had attracted protests.
"I personally feel that politics should not be involved in sport," Raj told AFP.
"Sport is more about entertainment and a fun-loving atmosphere. So we should not be getting too many political issues into it."

YouTube preparing to offer paid subscriptions this year, report

SAN FRANCISCO - YouTube, the video website owned by Google Inc , plans to offer paid subscriptions to some of the content on its site later this year, according to a media report.
YouTube has reached out to several video producers, asking them to submit applications to create for-pay "channels," according to a report in AdAge on Tuesday that cited anonymous sources.
The first such channels could be available to consumers by the second quarter for between $1 a month and $5 a month, AdAge reported.
YouTube, the world's No. 1 video website, has been moving to add professional-grade video programs to the vast archive of amateur, home-shot videos that made the site popular. The current crop of such channels is available to consumers for free and supported by advertising that appears alongside the videos.

After early success, Yahoo Mayer faces rising bar

SAN FRANCISCO - Six months into her tenure, Yahoo Inc Chief Executive Marissa Mayer has arrested the decline of the Internet portal and has won favor on Wall Street with stock buybacks, but a longer-term turnaround remains uncertain.
Her promise on Tuesday of a modest revenue uptick in the coming year paled in comparison with the growth of its Internet peers. And Yahoo shares, which have gained roughly 30 percent since Mayer took the reins in July, fell nearly 3 percent to $19.77 on Tuesday.
"All in all it seems like they're off of life support," said Michael Binger, a senior portfolio manager at Gradient Investments. But "I still see it as kind of a second tier-search company, a good display company. I still struggle to see the new avenues of growth."
Mayer, 37, who was Google Inc's first female engineer, warned investors on Monday that fixing Yahoo was a long-term project. She outlined a plan to overhaul a dozen of Yahoo's top websites, with the goal of enticing users to spend more time on them and consequently boosting ad revenue through a "chain reaction" of growth.
