Nokia axes dividend to save cash for Lumia push

A Nokia Lumia smartphone is pictured in a shop in Warsaw

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia plans to axe its annual dividend payment for the first time in the company's recorded history to shore up its cash position against falling sales and buy time for a turnaround.

While cost cuts and asset sales have given the struggling company breathing space to keep marketing what many call its make-or-break Lumia smartphones, analysts said it was far from a recovery and was still falling behind Samsung and Apple in the smartphone race.

Singer Janaki refuses to accept Padma Bhushan

Chennai:Expressing dissatisfaction over the number of people from South India figuring in the Padma awards list for 2013, southern playback singer Sreeramamurthy Janaki Friday refused to accept Padma Bhushan award announced for her on the eve of 64th Republic Day,
"I'm saddened by the fact that north India has been given more prominence than south India. I'm extremely disappointed and I refuse to accept the award," Janaki told IANS.
The 74-year old veteran made her singing debut in 1957 Tamil film "Vidhiyin Vilayattu". She has crooned over 15,000 songs in a career spanning five decades across all southern languages and in Hindi.
She has a long association with singer S.P. Balasubramanyam. The two have sung more than 1,000 songs together.

Vishwaroopam gets overwhelming response in Kerala

Chennai: Kamal Haasan's "Vishwaroopam" opened to an overwhelming response in Kerala, but after the first screening, the film's run was stopped in several theatres following protest from Muslim groups. Trade insiders say it is a clean movie.
"The first screening of the film was at 11 a.m. in approximately 82 screens in Kerala. But the film had to be banned in several cinemas after the first screening. Theatres closer to Tamil Nadu-Kerala border had to stop screening since Muslim outfits intervened," Arvind Nambiar, a distributor, told IANS.
"It's a clean film and is not targeted against any group or community. People should watch and decide for themselves whether it has any scenes that hurt the sentiments of any community," he added.
The shows were disrupted in places like Palakkad, Ettumanoor and some other towns of Kerala.
"There was no buzz around the release of the film as most of the cinemas decided to screen the film at the last minute, which was this morning. Since it released in smaller sections such as B and C, there were no problems initially, but later on the situation aggravated," Nambiar added.
The Tamil and Telugu versions of "Vishwaroopam", which deals with the adversities of war, were scheduled to release Friday, but the Tamil Nadu government Wednesday imposed curbs on it following protests from Muslim groups.

Big boots to fill

The tall frame of Ishant Sharma could not be missed as the Indian team engaged in a game of football at the HPCA Stadium here. Also in the limelight were the athletic Ashoke Dinda, and the tireless Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shami Ahmed.

Change is the only constant in the Indian cricket team. Ishant would know that as he suddenly finds himself a part of a new pace pack.

There is no Zaheer Khan to mentor him as the left- arm pacer is on his last legs. As someone who has been groomed to take over the mantle from Zaheer, Ishant still has some way to go before he can be truly called the leader the attack.

Though he has made impressive strides towards that in the ODI series against Pakistan and England, consistency is one area where he would want focus.

The Sri Lankans reached the target with seven balls to spare and are now guaranteed of retaining their number one ranking regardless of what happens in the second and final match in Melbourne on Monday.

Australia earlier won the toss and chose to bat, but apart from big-hitting opener David Warner they found scoring difficult.

Rohit, Raina clinch series for India

MOHALI: With one innings, the feelings that Rohit Sharma invokes among Indian cricket fans shifted from one extreme to another. On one extreme are the annoyances he causes: how poorly he had handled his early fame and success, and the bad habit of wasting the many chances given to him. Then, there are the bright sparks we saw today: the gift of sublime timing, the late dabs and glides square off the wicket, drives down the ground that makes your jaw drop, and the ability to absorb pressure in a big game. That last one you associate only with the best in the game.

US report catalyst for complaints against Huawei, ZTE

huawei complaints us report

The following a report released by the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, the panel has received "dozens and dozens" of complaints -- which has prompted further investigation into Huawei and ZTE's business practices.

Chinese telecom equipment makers Huawei and ZTE have come under fire after being accused of being a security risk -- apparently after the Chinese military obtained equipment produced by the firms that can be used to spy on sensitive information or potentially breach networks.

The congressional report was released Monday after an 11-month investigation, which urged U.S. firms to abandon Huawei and ZTE as well as recommending that government contractors do not work with either firm.

HP smuggles networking gear into enterprises via service provider financing deal

HP has followed in the footsteps of IBM with a financing initiative designed to get service providers to use its networking technologies.

The HP FlexNetwork Utility Advantage Program was announced on Wednesday and sees the IT giant try to tempt service providers into using its gear and software via a pay-per-use financing programme.

Switzerland's incumbent telco Swisscom has already signed up to the programme.

"Our customers want to focus on running their business rather than operating networks for employee access to applications like voice and videoconferencing," Oliver Spring, head of product line management for Swisscom, said in an HP statement.

Microsoft May Back Dell Buyout

Microsoft is in talks to help finance a takeover bid for Dell that would exceed $20 billion, report Michael J. de la Merced and Nick Wingfield in The New York Times. Microsoft is expected to contribute up to several billion dollars.

They write that an investment by Microsoft could be enough to push a leveraged buyout of the struggling computer maker over the goal line. Silver Lake, the private equity firm spearheading the takeover talks, has been seeking a deep-pocketed investor to join the effort. And Microsoft, which has not yet made a commitment, has more than $66 billion in cash on hand.

The private equity firm was part of a consortium that sold Skype, the online video-chatting pioneer, to Microsoft for $8.5 billion nearly two years ago. And the two companies had discussed teaming up to make an investment in Yahoo in late 2011, before Yahoo decided against selling a minority stake in itself.

Health Benefits of Banana

Bananas are one of the most famous common fruits amongst people of every age. Enjoyed in its various forms, bananas are eaten raw, accompanied with desserts, added in smoothies and consumed in many more ways too. Let us look at the benefits of eating this fruit.

Mumbai will miss Zaheer in Ranji final

Ranji Trophy heavyweights Mumbai might have won the championship a record 39 times, but this season they looked so woefully out of form that at one point they didn’t even seem to make it to the knockout stages.

But one man changed it all — Zaheer Khan. India’s pace bowling spearhead for a major part of the last decade produced a ferocious spell against Madhya Pradesh picking up five wickets for 79 runs in 19 overs. He once again showed what a fit Zaheer can do to opposition batsmen.

But that was followed by what has been Zaheer’s story over the last couple of years. After a terrific performance, he injured his calf and didn’t play the two knockout matches.

Despite his absence, Mumbai have made it to the title clash. But they would have wanted to have Zaheer in the line- up for the final.

When the final of the Ranji Trophy will be on at the Wankhede Stadium with Mumbai taking on Saurashtra, the man himself would be at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

Zaheer made it clear that he would take some time to recover completely. “Training and injury rehabilitation is going well at the NCA, but it will be a while before I get back to bowling,” he said.

New Zealand regain their pride in series win

Kimberley (South Africa): New Zealand beat South Africa in the second one day international here on Tuesday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three match series.

New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson's superb unbeaten career best 145 saw the tourists to a total of 279-8 while the hosts were all out for 252 in their reply to lose by 27 runs.
New Zealands victory goes some way towards putting behind them their 2-0 test series defeat by the South Africans.
Williamson's knock was only the second century for New Zealand on their tour of South Africa and saw him bounce back from a disappointing Test series with a confident, stroke-filled innings.
Despite Williamson's heroics, South Africa were on course for victory until two run-outs in successive overs derailed their run chase.

LONDON - World number three Luke Donald has extended his contract with clubmakers Mizuno as the Englishman seeks to end his wait for a first major title.
"I feel as if I am playing as well as ever at this stage in my career. Over the next few years I want to be in a position to win major championships and to continue to improve each year," Donald said in a statement on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old has used the same make of clubs since 2003 and has racked up 12 wins on the PGA and European Tours in that time, including a superb 2011 where he became the first player to win the money list titles both sides of the Atlantic.
Donald, who has spent 56 weeks at world number one, begins his 2013 campaign next month at the February 14-17 Northern Trust Open in California.
World number one Rory McIlroy, twice a major winner, changed his clubs when he signed a multi-million deal with Nike last week and in his first tournament with the new equipment he missed the cut.

Google and IBM Post Strong Earnings as the Tech Sector Heats Up

Technology titans Google and IBM delivered surprisingly strong earnings results Tuesday, in a positive sign for the tech sector following several quarters of lackluster performance across the industry. Google showed progress addressing one of its key challenges: the steady migration of users to mobile search, which generates less ad revenue for the company than desktop search.

Google reported strong revenue growth, in a sign that the overall online advertising market keeps growing, as marketers continue their seemingly inexorable shift away from traditional ad platforms — including print — and toward Internet advertising. Google shares soared 5% after the results were announced.

Kumble joins Mumbai Indians as chief mentor

Anil Kumble has ended his stint as the chief mentor of Royal Challengers Bangalore. He will be joining Mumbai Indians, replacing the team's mentor Shaun Pollock whose contract has come to an end.

The veteran leg-spinner who had led RCB to the IPL final in 2009 said he parts with the Challengers on good terms.

Kumble, who holds the record of being the highest wicket-taker for India in Tests, said in a media statement issued by the Reliance Group-owned Mumbai Indians: “In my discussion with Reliance Group Management, I find that they have a great and compelling vision for sports in this country, which aligns with my venture Tenvic Sports' aspirations in making sports as the main catalyst of youth development.”

”Mumbai Indians is a very competitive team in the IPL with high-profile players and committed owners. It’s my honour to join the Mumbai Indians as chief mentor and to align our joint interest in making sports as an important agenda in youth development. I look forward to the new assignment,” Kumble added.

Alarm bells ringing, but conditions offer hope

Mohali : The cool climes of Mohali will be a welcome relief for the weary England team who, after suffering two consecutive crushing defeats at the hands of India, are now in a must-win situation to keep the series alive. A part of the problem for England has been their poor batting display.

Ian Bell and Alastair Cook did give their side a solid platform in the first ODI at Rajkot by stitching 158 runs that eventually helped them put 325 on the board. But, in the next two matches, the duo came a cropper – they managed a stand of four runs in Kochi and 24 at Ranchi.

Ideal conditions
Bell, delighted by the conditions which he described as 'very much English', said his side needs to challenge India. "We have been a little bit disappointed by the way we have played. We haven't put up performances that can challenge India. We will review our games and, hopefully, in the next couple of days, we will have got the opportunity to put in performances equal to the first ODI, and stretch the series to the fifth match," said Bell.

The visitors failed to chase 285 in the second one-dayer while in the third the target of 155 was never going to be enough to defend. Bell said, though the team had enough batting strength to deal with early loss of wicket, it was important that the openers set the tempo.

We must get runs on the board by Tredwell

Mohali: England off-spinner James Tredwell on Tuesday said it is important for the visitors to put runs on the board to carry out their plans with the ball in the fourth One-Day International against India at the PCA Stadium.

“We have bowled quite nicely actually over the last few games. We know how dangerous the Indian batting line-up can be and I think we have actually shaped up quite nicely with the ball. Obviously, a few more runs on the board would have been nice. Hopefully, we can go out and get runs on the board and then carry out our plans with the ball,” said Tredwell, who was Man of the Match in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Rajkot.

With the visitors trailing 1-2, this is a must-win match for them to keep the five-match series alive.

“We go in to every game trying to win it, regardless of how the series is standing. And certainly it is at the back of your mind, but you have to focus on the next ball and then hopefully things take care of themselves, in terms of results,” Tredwell said.

Motorola Mobility to pull out of Korea, more than 500 jobs cut

screen-shot-2012-02-12-at-214445
Motorola Mobility will close "most" of its South Korean operations by 2013, according to a leaked internal memo.

According to the memo (in Korean), the move is part of a continued global restructuring effort by its parent company Google, which bought the smartphone maker earlier this year for $12.5 billion. Since then, however, restructuring costs have bumped the overall price close to $13 billion.

The deal was proposed by Google to acquire more than 17,000 patents from Motorola, but the hefty price tag will soon be challenged in court, where the search giant may discover that it paid far too much (or caught a bargain) for the company as the court will decide how much the patents are worth.

Vizio reveals 10 inch Android tablet powered by Nvidia Tegra 4 chip, CES 2013

nvidia-Tegra-4-tablet-mobile-processor-Chip

Two of the bigger stories from CES so far have been Vizio's Windows 8 tablet and Nvidia's Tegra 4 mobile processor. So it's only fitting that the two companies have combined on another piece of news in Vegas.

Vizio is apparently showing off a new tablet that runs on the Tegra 4 chip at the trade show, one of two new Android-based prototypes the company is working on. The model powered by the forthcoming Nvidia processor is a 10-inch model that packs 2,560x1,600 resolution, 32GB of storage, and NFC capabilities while running the Jelly Bean flavor of Android. The other tablet is a 7-inch version that also runs Jelly Bean, but lacks the NFC functionality and uses an unspecified processor.

The good, the bad and the ugly, in pictures by Microsoft tablets through the ages

Microsoft has been involved with tablets since the early 90s, which must make it all the more frustrating to see Apple turn up and grab practically the whole market with the iPad.

Microsoft is hoping the launch of the Surface Pro later this month could change all that. Ahead of its arrival, here's a look back at some of Microsoft's earlier efforts in the tablet market over the last decade. For more on the history of Windows tablets, read Surface tension: The long, strange history of the Windows tablet.

Above is a prototype tablet PC showcased by Microsoft at Comdex in 2000. Evidently back in the brighter, more optimistic year 2000, orange and white was a perfectly fine colour scheme for a tablet — if you tried to sell a similarly coloured device now, people would assume it was aimed at the under-tens.

Natural Remedies to Get Rid of Bad Breath

A Carnivores Guide To Gujarat

The culinary tide is slowly turning in Gujarat and non-vegetarians have more than just a glimmer of hope of a satisfying meal. As migrants pour into the state, restaurants serving non-vegetarian fare have started sprouting in towns and cities in Gujarat.
To meet the sudden surge in the demand for non-vegetarian food, global chains are setting shop in Gujarat. And they aren’t doing too badly. In Ahmedabad, non-vegetarian food accounts for almost 80 percent of the total sales at Barbeque Nation and about 60 percent of sales at Subway.
Food in Ahmedabad is known for its characteristic sweetness, as sugar is added to nearly all preparations. Non-vegeratian dishes are no exception. Barbeque Nation tempers the spice levels in its dishes. Pleasure Trove on Ashram Road at Nehru Bridge Corner, is a haven for those seeking good seafood or even global cuisine. The younger generation clearly enjoys experimenting with its food. Mirch Masala on SG Highway serves chicken and mutton biryani and kebabs while KBOB’s on Drive-In Road has people lining up for mutton seekhs, chicken tikka, chicken rara and prawn biryani.

Supreme Court considers petition to transfer Delhi rape trial

NEW DELHI - The Supreme Court will hear a petition on Tuesday by one of the five men charged with the gang rape and murder of a student in a bus to shift the case out of the capital on grounds that the atmosphere was too surcharged to ensure a fair trial.
Last month's assault on the 23-year-old woman on a New Delhi bus triggered an outpouring of anger and grief and calls for swift punishment for the five men and a juvenile who will be y tried separately.
One of the accused, Mukesh Singh, approached the Supreme Court urging the trial be held anywhere but New Delhi, saying both the police and the judiciary were under intense public pressure on the case and that a fair trial was not possible.
A bench headed by the Chief Justice Altamas Kabir will hear the petition on Tuesday, Singh's lawyer, Manohar Lal Sharma, said on Monday.
The petition came as a fast-track court took up the case against the five men who face the death penalty if convicted of the assault on the woman, who was on her way home from a movie, accompanied by a male friend.
