Trends that ruled the roost this year!

2012 saw a spate of trends, most of which was inspired from the early 80s and 90s. Although western wear made it to the hit list, ethnic wear gained more prominence among the fashion animals. Celebrities sported Indian wear in various hues and prints, paving the way for new style statements.

While Vidya Balan made her mark as the ‘saree queen’ donning elegant Georgette and Kanjeevaram silks in bright colours, other A-listers seemed to take fashion cues from yesteryear actors, sporting long Anarkalis teamed with tight chudhidars and stilettos.

1.  Anarkali

The long, flowing Indian gown has been on the cards of late, with every celebrity trying her hands at it. Designed for the Indian body type, these suits are made of silky chiffon or Georgette on the inside, completed with a rich silk or tussar finish on the outside, in bold hues.

From red carpet dresses to sangeet ceremonies, Anarkali suits rule the show. They come in rich colours with heavy sequin work and frock-type cuts.  ‘Anarkali dresses have an elegant A-line cut, designed specifically for Indian women and their stature,’ adds ace designer Sandeep Verma.

Recently popular B-town stars like Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan and even veteran actresses like Sridevi & Madhuri Dixit have been spotted donning it.

Jadeja is not yet a serious Test No6

The selection committee’s decision to pick Ravindra Jadeja in the Test squad for Nagpur as Yuvraj Singh’s replacement seems a no- brainer.

After all, the Saurashtra boy whacked two triple centuries in the space of three weeks and is fitter, more agile and a better part- time leftarm spinner than the man he replaces.

And yet, there seems to be hardly any chance of Jadeja making his Test debut ahead of Ajinkya Rahane, given that the Mumbaikar is a better pure batsman, something Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s team is in dire need of given its performances over the last year or so.

If at all the selectors were considering someone else, to pitch for Jadeja ahead of Rohit Sharma and Manoj Tiwary seems a fallacy.

Being a bits- and- pieces player is alright in one- day cricket, and a boon in T20s, which has led to Jadeja playing 58 ODIs and earning a $ 2million contract with the IPL’s Chennai Super Kings. But to transfer those skills to Tests is another matter altogether.

This is why somebody like Robin Singh, a late 1990s ODI stalwart, played just one Test.

While a first- class 300 is rare, and therefore no mean feat, one needs to balance that stat with the fact that Jadeja got those triples against lessthan- mediocre attacks from Gujarat and Railways, on highways in Surat and Rajkot respectively.

Rayudu replaces Tiwary for T20I series against England

 

Mumbai, Dec 11 (IANS) Major Tiwary, who was selected to play in the two-match Twenty20 International series against England, has been ruled out citing a side strain. He will be replaced by Baroda batsman Ambati Rayudu.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision through a press release Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Tiwary, who has played three T20Is for India, was picked by the All-India Senior Selection Committee Sunday for the matches to be played in Pune (Dec 20) and Mumbai (Dec 22).

This is Rayudu's, a right hand batsman, maiden call to the Indian team. The 27-year-old batsman is currently playing in the Ranji Trophy and has already hit four half-centuries and one hunred out of the six matches he has played this season.

India is yet to play the fourth and final Test match against England which starts Dec 13.
